WASHINGTON, DC — Cuba Educational Travel strongly condemns today’s attack on the Cuban Embassy in Washington, a shocking reminder of the violence too often used by opponents of better relations between the United States and Cuba.

“This is a powerful reminder of a troubling past of extreme violence and how aggressive, hate-filled rhetoric can lead to violence,” said Collin Laverty, CET President.

For years, Cuban diplomats were targets of assassination attempts in the U.S. The same can be said of academics, policy analysts, businesspeople, cultural figures and others that push for improved relations with Cuba. Gun violence, car bombs, death threats and other acts of violence, unfortunately, have been all too common.

“We call on the Trump Administration to fully investigate the case and take steps to protect all members of the diplomatic community,” added Laverty. Under the Vienna Convention, the U.S. has the obligation to protect all accredited diplomats on American soil, including those from Cuba.
